I suppose that this had to happen eventually, running a messageboard people had heard of....
The simple version of the story is that the version of phpBB which has been running at gremlin.net for the last few months proved to have an exploitable backdoor, or something; the story as I've worked it out to date is that scriptkiddies running bots are able to get into the backend of V2.0.11 and fuck around, usually installing spyware through newexpl.php.
So. At the moment, I'm upgrading the board to V2.0.17 to patch that little hole. If everything works out correctly, there should be no particular problems apart from this downtime. Failing that, I should be able to put the board back together from a recent backup of its database, though that's about a week old. Can't really be helped, since that was the last backup I'd made before this happened; any backups since may contain the spyware shit and may be difficult to clean out again.
Anyway: for those wondering where in hell the board went, that's the story so far. I'll add more updates as they occur....
Got it. Everything should be fixed now.
I'm not sure what spyware could have been installed, since I didn't personally let it get that far. I do know that the board was cracked sometime in the last ten hours or so; if you hit the index of the board between about midnight and ten DenverTime [that would be around ten to six Eastern, and so on], you might wanna run a quick scan for fun additions to your machines. LavaSoft.de has some pretty good freeware shitkiller if you happen to lack that sort of thing.
More later....
