It being just about February again, it's apparently time to move.
About a year ago, we upgraded to what was advertised as a decent server with no less than five redundant backbones preventing any chance in all hell of ever having gremlin.net go offline.
Since gremlin.net has in fact gone offline anyway on an average of once a month for the last year, I've come to the conclusion that someone lied to me, is too stupid to set up a server to use five redundant backbones, or both.
So. We're moving. Again.
This time, I looked into things a bit more deeply before grabbing the first host with a couple of neat options. The result was...lemee find something neat real quick...the result was DreamHost.com. That link, incidentally, isn't precisely to DreamHost.com itself, but to a form allowing You the Sucker Visitor to donate anything from fifty cents to ONE TRILLION DOLLARS [ahem] to the general cause of keeping gremlin.net on the air. As it were.
Actually, I already paid for the first two years; we'll be here until 2008 and beyond [pending GLOBAL THERMONUCLEAR WARFARE (ahem)], but...anyone with fifty cents or more burning a hole in a MasterCard is welcomed to throw it at us. Why not.
Anyway: we haven't really moved yet. Like, as of this writing. We're still at the old host with the five redundant ways to fall offline once a month. I'm working on transplanting everything to the new server [moving the board and this blogue will prove the trickiest] in advance, so, theoretically, no one will even notice that we've moved. Except that, ironically enough, the site won't drop offline. If I didn't move everything first, it very much would. Though hopefully for the last time.
In other news, kinda, since I haven't blogued anything in a week or more, I've been moving wastedinc.com awayish from CafePress.com and back to its own server. It's still mostly outsourcing everything to CP, but the new setup gives me more control over the layout and stuff. Also, since I've been getting dangerously tired of playing with the layout, I've also been adding new merch. Read through Wasted's blogue when you get there, and have a look at the New Stuff category first thing.
Okay. I killed the amount of time it was taking to upload the latest batch of nine-year-old junk to the new server. Back to populating the new place so I can get away from the old one.
More later....
