We’re back.
Mostly.
We’re on the new server now. And, so far, things are working pretty well. Though there are a few exceptions.
For one thing, while we got this bloguesystem reassembled, including the content lurking in its database, the board didn’t port over so perfectly. Mostly [I think] because the old server stored the database at localhost, and the new one stores databases within thirdlevel domains. So the board, though caught up to look correct, wasn’t able to find its old content. Or, for that matter, its userlist. So everyone will have to reregister before starting to fill the thing up again.
Next little problem: the new server doesn’t much like my old ActiveServer coding. I’m not totally sure why yet. But, for the moment, a lot of the x.asp files are failing to resolve into Firefox, at least. Which is actually okay: it just gives me another reason to transcribe everything to PHP and stash the content into databases. I was planning to do that anyway; I just never quite got it done.
There is, of course, some good news.
For one thing, I’ve got grem.tv set up to work again. Not that it’s actually working yet, but everything’s in place to allow for the older system I’d had. By the time you read this, for example, http://board.grem.tv may well kick over to the boardsystem. Again. Despite register.com’s useless interface.
Also, having infinite domains and TLDs, I’ve gone ahead and moved a few things out to their own sites. Stuff like WorstPacific.com and JestBuy.com and CurcuitPity.com are now all independent sites. Which isn’t all that large a deal, except that you won’t hit a site and have it show up as gremlin.net/domain.com anymore.
Additionally, having infinite TLDs [technically, that’s not all that new, except that the setup on the old server wasn’t worth using], and more serverspace and bandwidth than I’ve ever used in the last nine years, I can set up both usersite.gremlin.net [or, really, usersite.whatever.com] and also stack up several trillion user@gremlin.net EMail addresses. Although, thinking about it, I should probably go upload all the userTLDs currently missing from the ’net after the move before I get too heavily into adding new ones. It’ll take all of a few minutes.
In the last entry here, I mentioned the new Donation Thing. Look for it there; I don’t remember the URL for it at the moment. I’m guessing that Hunter’ll have that at http://coffeechick.com any second now, for anyone who can’t go another minute without donating at least fifty cents toward keeping the site online for the rest of time. I’m also pondering a sort of private.club.members.section.gremlin.net thing, accessible beyond the donation link. That way, gremlin.net wouldn’t require any money to reach, but the people who wanted to fund the operation in part would get some sort of updating goody out of it.
That’s about as far as I’ve thought that through, to date. I’ll see what else I can come up with.
Anyway: there’s still some more to do to get the whole site back online, and I’ve got stuff to upload to about fifty other domains here on the new server. It’ll probably still be a couple of days before everything’s running perfectly here. Or, as close to perfect as anything ever gets, anyway.
More later….
