Paroxysm, by Gremlin. A well written and apparently quite scary [books just don't scare me] horror novel about zombies. I haven't read a book that was as hard to put down since, well...it's been a while.

In like a lion; out like a lion with rabies

Apparently, adages don't really dictate meteorology.
At the moment, it's 4.30 in the morning, and twenty-eight degrees. There's snow on the ground. And it's approximately the end of March. Meanwhile, throughout the month, it's been in the seventies here. So this is strange.
Not that Denver isn't strange in general, of course.
And why is this happening? Probably because I've got less than half a pack of cigarettes, and little interest in leaping out into the snow to hit 7Eleven, that being the only place currently open around here. To make sure I get no sympathy from anyone: Sev sell packs for about five bucks each; places open during the day have cartons for thirty. I know: anywhere else in the world, five bucks a pack is a forgotten dream. I just don't really care very much.
Curiously, I was at Sev about a week ago. No good reason, except that we were walking over to KingStoopid's [the other thing in the zipcode open all night] when my Zippo ran out of fluid. Turns out that Sev no longer have matchbooks. At all. Which is reportedly part of the failed laws against cigarettes in the state. I dunno. To my thinking, that I tend to collect matchbooks has just made the ones I've got a little more rare; I've got matchbooks around here from places like Sambo's, for example.
Anyway....
I found out about the snow because I blew out the damned grid again. That impresses me. This house is younger than I am, yet I'm able to overload the fuses with everything I've got running in here. The fusebox is, for some stupid reason, in the backyard. And so is the snow. So I found out about it.
That being boring, let's move on....
I'm still working on a few things here. Though I did have to stop when progress started rearing its productive head. Then I spent twelve hours getting through HalfLife2. Finally. Which follows the general trend, of course: I bought the game the day it came out, installed it that night, got as far as meeting Barney and getting out to that playground, then forgot about it entirely. Now that I've actually got through the game: it's actually pretty cool. Also, until the gravitygun gets upgraded, the crowbar is in fact the most useful weapon you'll ever get. Unless various cheatcodes count as weapons, that is. And those are good if only to allow a bit of noclipping so you can fly around and really see some of the graphics in this thing.
Not that this is really news, at this point. But, mentioning it anyway, I can justify the fifty bucks for the game as a writeoff. Whee.

Speaking of writeoffs, I got round to ordering a sixpack of the biblical greetingcard books the other day. Until now, I'd never bothered to order any greetingcards, and could only hear the horrorstories from everyone else. I guess it's not quite as bad as people had reported, but it's not entirely good, either.
For those not in the loop: the concern to date has been that CP print or had already printed their logo on the backs of these cards. Additionally, there's no way to get rid of it, and/or to replace it with a different logo. Seeing it now, it's not really all that bad a thing; it's just a smallish thing at the bottom reading Printed By [sic] [CafePress.com], using their current logo, in grey. I don't see it as a huge problem on my end; on their end, I'm a bit surprised that they'd want to be associated with some of the cards people are making, possibly including this one. If there's really a reason to get rid of their logo, the argument could be made that, by jamming it onto the back of a card like this, they appear to be completely in favour of it. But that's their problem.
The logo notwithstanding, the cards aren't terrible. They're really about what they look like in the backend: glossy covers and matted interiors. A postcard with added whitespace, really. And they come with a sixpack of appropriatelysized envelopes, of course.
At the same time, I grabbed a few of Hunter's flashtoon things on white shirts. Partly so she could have them on white shirts; partly to see whether they're printing correctly on white, since I personally tend to get stuff on black. They look pretty good, I think. I haven't got any shots of those yet; if she hasn't got them up at coffeechick.com yet, they'll probably be there soon. I haven't looked over there in a few days.
I think that's pretty much everything. I got the newer GTA game for the PSP the other day, though I still haven't finished MetalGear yet. At some point, I'll have got through both, and probably mention it here. Never know.
More later....
