I would guess that the characters from the original trilogy would still be alive. Solo was twenty-nine in Episode Four, putting him at roughly Ford's current age after thirty years.

Whether Artoo and Threepio would still be operational is almost irrelevant. I'm not sure why they still worked after thirty years. But they're the common denominator here; they're the two characters really telling the story.

Anyway, as I just mentioned, FanFic has this habit of going off in new directions--authorised or not. If you're actually planning to release this trilogy with the consent of Lucas, then there's a lot of things to determine; I've heard that you essentially just write the book, hand it over, and find out whether you happened to get it right. I haven't determined what the real guidelines are.

If you're not planning to publish it, then it probably doesn't matter much either way. Write it however you like, and see what people think of it, I guess....
