I know a thing or two about American law; at any rate, except for that whole common law thing we have here in Canada, the laws in each country are pretty damned similar. That said, I did actually research this stuff before writing it, having nothing better to do now that exams have finished and my summer job has yet to start. All laws quoted and referenced were American laws -- either federal statutes or specific state laws that, according to my research, approximated the laws in most other American states. So I am confident that all I said applies with considerable accuracy.
