Without getting into the merits (or lack thereof) of Lewis' argument -- I'm on the road now, and have neither time nor inclination -- I will point out that's it is ultimately a matter of burden of proof. More precisely, it falls upon the theists and not the other way around. It's a logical axiom: you must be able to prove that something exists. You cannot prove that something does not exist. This leads to that other logical principle; namely, that lack of proof of existence logically suggests (although it does not prove) lack of existence; whereas lack of proof of non-existence does not logically suggest existence.

I have no evidence to prove that the American Senate is not peopled by giant beavers disguised as crusty old men. But I can reasonably suppose it's not.
