While black on grey is better than black on white, white on black is easier to read, for most people. That's the primary reason I use it.
I've considered the hovering links--partly because I don't bother underlining links in Flash, and people still figure out what to click on. I might add something like that.
Having the visited links set to the same colour as the background is a mistake. People do go back through the boards and reread things; ghosting them to grey on black works better.
