Let's say there is no god. What does this mean?
To put it in a less confusing way: To date we have observed nothing in reality, that does not comply with the laws of nature. This statement holds true for everything up to the universal horizon. After that, physicists admit that the laws of physics may not apply. The same might be true for quarks as well. Both are areas that humans are supremely ignorant of. Traditionally, gods have been placed just outside of human understanding. Sort of a catch all answer for things we have yet to understand. A god also tends to imply some form of intelligence and/or caring for other things. So by saying that there is no god, we say that there is no catch all, caring, intelligence that controls the events of things that we do not understand, or have yet to understand. Anyone else care to optimize this anymore?
It means that there is no all powerful entity (entities) that exists outside of the laws of nature, and yet is still capable of interfering with the lives of things that are bound by these laws.
