That sounds like Compaq. Proprietary junk. Their unofficial motto is hey: at least we're not Dell.
I've been thinking about this a lot over the last few days, since I 'upgraded' to WindozeXP. There was a time when computers were only for people who knew how to use them--back when IBM's position was that, in the future, there would be an eventual need for up to five computers on Earth. That time is over. You no longer need an actual purpose to have a computer. So computers no longer need to be purposeful.
Maybe it's me, but, as someone qualified to hardwire an Apple to a Zenith, I have to wonder why tech support exists for an OS which automatically downloads updates from microsoft.com. Unless, of course, computers have evolved from tools into toys. Ironically, the last real computer I bought was designed by Atari engineers.
On the bright side, it looks like Compaq have been bought out by HewlettPackard now. They'll probably remain as usersystems, but they might become a little easier to fix and upgrade now.
After all: HP just released this 2.4GHz laptop. It's half as fast as my ten-year-old Atari/Commodore Amiga.
And people say there's no such thing as progress....
