Regarding the bible, I'm concerned specifically with the letter of the text. When the bible states that a circle has a circumference of thirty cubits and a diameter of ten, there's a mistake there. Bothering to look up the fact that a cubit is eighteen inches does nothing to change the ratio here.
The sad fact of the matter is that the bible is nothing more than the plagiarism of older, outdated fables. The bible simply doesn't work anymore.
If you want a working bible, I have a couple of suggestions.
     A) stop telling everyone that the parts of the bible disproved by reality are mistranslated, but everything yet to be disproved is the unaltered word of a deity. Feel free to retranslate the bible to adhere to the general scientific knowledge of the twenty-first century. However: be prepared to have your new bible refuted to hell and back the instant something new is discovered and you failed to predict it before retranslating the bible to work with factual sciences.
     B) abandon the bible altogether and write a new one which adheres to scientific fact. That, of course, has been done before. You can expect this new bible to be refuted by forthcoming discoveries as well.
     C) abandon theism altogether and grow up.
Personally, I'm more in favour of C. But then, I'm a scientist: I'm more interesting in the discovery of real things than the invention of fictional ones.

Regarding your palaeontological laity: I'll leave that one to Jurassosaur to spank you over; that's what he lives for, after all >:)
