The downside to the format is the required plugin, which [as far as I know] has to be intentionally installed, and which--worse--automatically instals that Gator/GAIN shit along with it, which then requires the installation and use of AdAware to eliminate. Which seems like a lot to ask just to be able to watch something on the 'net.
Also, when I tried to encode the thing to DivX to see what the filesize looked like, it complained that I'd had the audacity to remove Gator/GAIN from my computer, and told me that I'd have to reinstal it in order to encode anything to .mp4.
Those issues aside, there are a couple of advantages to DivX. The filesize-to-quality ratio isn't too bad, of course. And it's not easy to reverse engineer a DivX file into anything else. Which is probably something to think about if and when it seems practical to release full-quality versions on disc in the future.
