While this is arguably the best setup for a messageboard--insorfar as it's a lot easier to get to new replies in less clicks than with something like EZBoard--the fact remains that, in the twenty-first century, more people are familiar with the topic-by-topic format than a true outline format like this.
Since the only other website I can think of containing an outlined board like this is ViewAskew.com, it's probably pretty unusual to most modern surfers. And, especially as a board grows up and over, it can get a bit difficult to trace a reply exactly back to the opening post of the thread.
I've considerd changing the UL tags to OL tags to see what happens; logically, it should number the primary threadheaders sequentially, and each subheader would start in its place from 1. The trick then would be that the actual order would be reversed--the newest top thread would have a lower number than the oldest. And that would seem kinda strange, too.
As it is, the easiest thing to do is to click on the primary post and see what replies exist within it. Not that it usually matters much either way: most people just reply to the specific post in question, possibly HREFerencing other relevant posts, elsewhere on the board.
