Because the rat, while having the mass of a pound, was quickly bloating to the volume of a poodle. We worked out--somehow or other--that the thing would eventually bloat to the point that it would simply float out on its own, expanding in size, dwarfing a dolphin, and probably chasing us about like Scrooge's Marley: 'You fed me to a lizard...it didn't eat me...I want my cake....'
Which, uh...accounts for the floating zombies, of course. It's a methane buildup. Basic thermodynamics. Hot air balloons.

Of course if the little 1 lb rat would need to grow to near dolphin size in order to go floating about, just imagine how huge a human zombie would have to get.

Hmmm, it might actually look something like the "Cancer" from Silent Hill 3.

     The Cancer...scarier in motion

This type of thinking might actually explain these monstrosities a little better. Though they are huge buggers, don't be fooled. Once they get up and see you, they'll chase you down. Furthermore they can run faster than you (which really isn't saying too much since RE's characters are the only ones who've ever been capable of any real running speed).

When one finally does take one of these fat bastards down, they actually start to deflate.

How about that, SH3's "Cancer" is nothing more than a malignant methane balloon.
