It seems to start up whenever the computer tries performing several visible operations at once (closing/opening several windows while starting to run other programs, etc.). It also starts whining if it's on too long (half an hour to an hour). My guess (worthless as it is) is that something's causing the damn thing to overheat, and that's the warning signal before something goes *fizzle*.
