What's New by Gremlin

Deities and other brontosaurs

I guess this kinda qualifies as a site update.
If you hit the board, you'll notice a huge thread launching with Who here would be interested in the proof of the existence of a god?. While we haven't seen any evidence of deities yet [the thread is rapidly approaching a hundred replies], we're managing to build up a sort of database of stoppers, which is useful. Everything from Pascal's Losing Wager to the differences between beliefs and theories. Have a look.
In a loosely-related story, there's a big push to reinstate Brontosaurus ajax into the taxonomy beneath the Saurischia.
In case you didn't know, brontosaurs were the result of a hasty mistake in the nineteenth century. O.C.Marsh, in a hurry to find more genera than Edwin Drinker Cope, had already named an animal as Apatosaurus excelsus when this brontosaur thingy was found. It was another apatosaur, but Marsh grabbed the skull from a Camarasaurus lentis found twenty miles away from the 'brontosaur', apparently decided that it had, like, rolled that far, and jammed it onto the apatosaur's neck, creating a new genus.
Several years ago, someone finally got round to contesting that, and eliminated Brontosaurus ajax from the taxonomy.
Now, a number of palaeontologists are recommending that the former brontosaur be reinstated, because it displays enough differences from the other species of apatosaurs to be its own genus after all.
Personally, I'm not buying it yet. I'll admit that the former brontosaur is a separate species, but I'm not convinced that it's a new genus. Time will tell, I suppose.
Incidentally: I'm still working on the HGD here; and it will include brontosaurs. But, until or unless brontosaurs are shown to be a valid genus, their entry will just be the backstory and a link to the apatosaurs.
I can always update that if brontosaurs are shown to have been real animals.
Beyond that, we're still working on the new sites. But there's not really enough done to discuss those yet. I'll mention the hell out of it when there is.
More later....
