Downtime
This should come as no surprise. I'm certainly not surprised anymore.
Regarding SiteoftheLivingDead.com and phobivore.com: we're still waiting for them to catch up with the server. I'm not sure when we can expect that to happen. Maybe by August; maybe not.
As for Hunter's missing What's New: since she didn't get it to me yesterday, it's gone. This, of course, is why.
I moved into this place at the beginning of the month. Or, really, on 28th June. Great. On 30th June, I got a memo mentioning that the manager was leaving. I didn't worry too much about that at the time.
That a few things don't work here, and were reportedly backordered, was a slight concern.
Then, yesterday, after I uploaded the What's New, the power was unexpectedly shut off. And that took out the cablemodem and Hunter's computer [the laptop stayed on for about half an hour]; Hunter's computer, containing her What's New, managed to corrupt the damned file when it shut itself off without any warning. So it's lost now. We're factoring that under Damages.
This is what happened.
By law, in a controlled community--a row of flats, townhouses, or whatever--the manager of the property [the one who was 'leaving' on 30th June] is required to switch all the utilities over to the new tenant's name. Guess who didn't do that before 'leaving'.
So now I'm on a mobile phone which I can't recharge anymore, trying to get the damned power company to understand that I'm not, ah, Ralpho. Where Ralpho was the guy living here before getting evicted for failing to pay for things like rent and electricity. Ralpho the Great. These things only happen to me.
Fortunately, the next door neighbour--coincidentally the exhandyman who quit being the handyman at about the time the manager 'left', because he was getting tired of putting up with her shit--ran into me as I was about to recharge my phone in the car, and bummed me an extension cord to plug all the powerstrips into. So we were actually only down for an hour or two.
The power company finally managed to get my outlets to work again after about six hours.
So, now that I'm officially nonplussed, I went to the managers office to...to wait until they got back from lunch at three in the afternoon. But then: I found out that the manager 'left' because she got fired for neglecting such little matters as switching over utilities and getting things fixed, which led to the neighbouring exhandyman quitting because he was tired of getting blamed for not knowing anything was broken since she never told him.
Anyway: the new manager is very cool. She's calling in people to fix all this stuff for two hundred bucks an hour [if anyone wants a job in the Denver Metro Area, this place hasn't got a maintenance staff at the moment, and want to pay people less than two hundred bucks an hour to fix things], and apparently doing something interesting to the $1200 rent next month, since that's a bit too much to pay for a place without a working dishwasher or central air.
Personally, I don't care if it's ninety degrees in here; but Hunter doesn't like that much.
More good news: as far as the manager is concerned, she doesn't care how many people I have living here at any given time. Which is good, since Hunter has to live somewhere, but has to remain officially homeless to get the army to pay her all the money they owe her.
About that: because Hunter is homeless, and because that expidites her claim, and because her claim has been rushed before the one moron who can approve it and get it all over with, we're only looking at an estimated eight months before he notices that it's on his desk. Off the record, the explanation from an anonymous source is that the army have been operating slightly illegally for a couple of years now, and it's catching up with them now; everything has been delayed by years.
I'm done playing these games. I'm launching a few lawyers at these plebeians. I know way too many people in way too many places, and I'm fully aware that, with a phonecall and a verifiable explanation, I can personally write the coverstory for USAToday. All it takes is a little more attrition to fully erode my apathy.
Then there's this. Greenback is off doing something for Lockheed/SAC [more military bullshit] this week. Except that it turns out that he's not. It turns out that it's next week. So if you've ever wondered how your tax dollars are spent: one way is to drop Greenback into a hotel for a week, all expenses paid, because someone forgot which Monday he was supposed to be there before sending him a plane ticket.
Which also means that he's not going to be back here until sometime in August--after I've left for DuhMoines. Leaving Hunter here with nothing more than a snake, a lizard, and an Uzi to keep her company.
So that's thrilling.
Maybe something will actually happen sometime this month. So far, I kinda doubt it.
More later....
