The firstborns of Leia and Han were twins, Jacen and Jaina. By Luke's reccomendation, they were sent to his newly formed Jedi Academy at the age of 14. Shortly before they were sent off, though (or during their absense, i forget), Leia gave birth to Anakin, their third child.
It may be that some books speek of Anakin only, as he is the only one living with the Solos at the time. Then some might mention only the twins, as Anakin has yet to be born.
Kevin Anderson's "Jedi Academy Trilogy" explained it pretty well.
