What might be possible is to set up the colours as variables, and let the users decide what to use. It would be difficult to set up the old boards that way, but the new ones could do it.
I never really thought about it before. The few complaints we've had on the white-on-black scheme came from a bunch of first-year psychology students who wanted to believe that white-on-black was hard to read.
I suppose I could clarify that real quick.
In CYMK, black-on-white is better; in RGB, white-on-black is better. It's mostly a matter of the lightsource. On paper, the light is reflecting off of the material, and a large amount of whitespace does a lot of good. On a screen, the light is behind the material, and a large amount of blackspace serves the same purpose.
The wild card is projections, which are still RGB. The credits in a film are generallly white on a darker background.
