He's initially attempting to establish that deities are possible by using the pantheistic idea that deities represent whatever is already known to exist.
     Obviously, that's pointless, since we already have terms for things which exist, and don't really need new terms to describe the same things. You can identify components like steering wheels and lugnuts, and then group all of those pieces into a single entity called a car. I think the idea here was to group all physics and other intangibles into a group called a deity. Although we already call that group a universe.
     We've moved beyond the nomenclature thing [I hope] and are now expecting evidence of a new sort of animal called a deity; simply renaming things we already have as deities doesn't do anyone any good.
