Legally speaking, nothing prevents either from being shown on television. A couple of laws disallow various 'pornographic' and 'obscene' things from being shown; but those laws, once contested, always seem to die against the first amendment.
Policies are a different matter. If I really wanted to, I could create--and enforce--a policy disallowing the use of adverbs at gremlin.net. Adverbs are legally allowed; a policy can prevent their use anyway. Erm...that is to say that adverbs are allowed; a policy can prevent their use.
The problem is essentially that, while the christians are the global minority, they are, in fact, the majority of the US. So, here in the land of the free, we see policies disallowing things like pornography and profanity; the only thing you can view here is the biblically exalted gratuitous violence, misogeny, racism, and general insults toward homosapiens and other animals.
Nothing legally prevents much of anything being shown on any given network, at any time of day or night. The FCC have a guideline from [I think] five in the morning through seven at night, and will attempt to fine you for breaking their rules. The networks themselves have policies they arbitrarily set and adhere to.
Given the balls to do it, a network could broadcast just about anything they like. They just don't like to broadcast 'bad' things. You kinda get what you pay for. Networks like HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime broadcast these things; they also charge you for the privellege of seeing them.
