I am continuously astounded by the misinformation that comes to the chat room, concerning physics. Here's an example from earlier. (Some people hear segments and then try and pronounce it factual)

insane_manifestation_of_a_cat : alcyonian i agree with most of what you say - but i regard the laws of thermodynamics as more than hypothesis
Alcyonian : insane_manifestation_of_a_cat: "Energy cannot be created nor destroyed" is the hypothesis of 1st law. The law itself is "change in internal energy of a system equals the differences between the heat taken in by the system and the work done by the system"
Alcyonian : Each law starts off with an inference. That inference, is a statement or hypothesis. Then the behaviour of it is tested, and when it's explained, it becomes a theory, when it's applied, it becomes a principle, when it is generalised, due to observation, under stated circumstances, it becomes a law.
