Anything past that is pure conjecture. But if held at gunpoint and forced to give my opinion, I'd say the possibility I'd most likely go with is,

-They (the people that captured him, I don't know who exactly they are, and don't really care anyways) killed him before the decapitation because, though a live decapitation would have been nice, it wouldn't have been worth the fuss, so they'd get as much dramatic effect as possible with a recently-dead decapitation.
