Long time, no see.

It's been . . . what . . . maybe a year since I've swung by this place? Huh. Time flies.

Anyway, I'm afraid I'm still far too busy to come by here with anything remotely resembling regularity. Still, in case anybody's interested, I figured I'd let you all know what's new in my life -- and because I'm interested, I'll ask what's new in the Grempire.

Let's see . . . I'm almost halfway through my third year of university now. I switched from an English major to a film major and now to a history major; for better or for worse that's where I'm stuck for the duration. I'm enjoying this whole history thing, though; and I'm getting a bachelor's degree anyway, so it doesn't really matter what I study.

I've had some pretty brilliant courses since I've been at this school . . . History of the Polish Jewry, History of Rome and Athens, Shakespeare, Metaphysics, Ethical Issues, and Twentieth-Century Canadian Political History stand out from first year. Last year I studied Film History and Film Production, as well as Greek History, Roman History, European Society since 1789, and The Diffusion of Modern Economic Growth, among other courses. Currently I'm taking courses in American Social History from 1870 to 1970, Twentieth-Century German History, History of the Arab-Israeli Conflict, and Macroeconomic Theory. One year to go and I'll have my Honours degree.

Outside of school I've been insanely busy. Debating takes up a lot of time: I'm coordinating Queen's National High School Debating Tournament, and I debated at Harvard University a couple of weeks ago. The day after tomorrow I'm off to Toronto.

I was actively involved in Model Parliament last year, and this year I'm leader of the Progressive Conservative party (I'm not conservative IRL, however). I'm making a run for Prime Ministership next week; I have a reasonable chance of getting it, although I'll probably wind up with Leader of the Official Opposition.

I'm working hard with the Alma Mater Society, our student government. I'm considering applying for a full-time paid position there in the spring, and I think I have a decent shot at getting it. Which'd be great.

I've been so busy, in fact, that I've given up things like watching movies, surfing the internet, eating, and sleeping. Ah, well; who needs a life anyway?

I've decided finally upon a career. Knocking on wood most superstitiously and surreptitiously, it looks like I'll be going to Yale Law School in a year and a half. Beyond that, I'm planning on practising law somewhere in New York or New England and eventually becoming an American citizen. Yes, I'm selling my soul to the Evil Empire for a bigger paycheck, lower taxes, and a higher dollar. So sue me. I just ask that you retain my firm.

That's about the size of it . . . I have no plans to return home to Cape Breton Island (the armpit of Canada) in the foreseeable future, save to visit. I am going back to Iowa in February. I was there a year ago. My prevailing memory of the state is flat: a lot of flat. But I'm sure you could tell me more about that.

At least this time we'll be spending a few days in Chicago. My family lives on the Illinois border (Davenport, to be exact), so it's not as bad as, say, Des Moines, by all accounts.

That's it for me. I have to go and sleep now. It'll be my first and last opportunity to do so for some time . . . So, uh, let me know how life goes here. I'll try to drop by again soon, and you can always email me.

Checking out,
     The Host/Genghis/Matt Boudreau
