I clicked on the Interview link, and ran into a splash advert for Dawn of the Dead, which I was just about to review up on main.html.
To keep these things separate, though....
I'm not sure what Capcom are up to with this. It almost looks like someone had a look at RockStar's Manhunt and got a bright idea. That, or maybe Splatterhouse, if anyone else remembers that one.
Of course, while Manhunt was a decent game [granting that the only thing making it longer than an Animaniacs episode was its steep learning curve], it was pretty far removed from Res. So I hope I'm wrong about that.
And, thinking more about Splatterhouse, I guess Capcom already based Res on that: same little worm thingies.
As for the analogue aiming, that's good news and bad. I didn't mind the aiming setup for DeadAim, provided I was using a GunCon2; the rest of the time...it wasn't a lot of fun using a basic PS2 controller; people get dead that way in a hurry.
Framing Res4 into 16*9 is good news. I assume it's anamorphic, with blackbars on 4*3s, instead of mashed like Vise City tends to be. Now I just wonder about the cutscenes. Are those matted down to 64*27 [2.35:1] to differentiate them, or will we have to pay more attention than usual? And if you're really wondering how much attention that can take, try playing an older Res game on a widescreened television, on Zoom1. It's amazing what gets hidden in the top and bottom of the screen when you can't see it.
Based on the history, I have some doubts that Capcom are setting up a new tangent, per se. Based on what's already happened, they're probably using this game to start a new storyline, and then ResX will attempt to bridge the Umbrella zombies to whatever this thing is about, once they've had a year or two to think about it.
Making Res4 exclusive to the GameCube is probably a good idea, simply because Nintendo [of all people] are actually ahead of the competition for graphics now. I still like the PS2 for its ability to play TwistedMetal2 and the GunCon2 port. But even DeadAim [the first true PS2 version] and Manhunt, as good as they happen to look, aren't quite as realistic as Res0 turned out to be. If the PS3 turns out to be anything like the 256bit 2GHz machine it's been rumoured to become, then it'll stand a chance; but the 128bit consoles have a clear winner, to date. And, if this must be said, it's not XBox.
What I don't see yet is an estimated release date for Res4. I assume it's due out by giftmas 2004, but I'd already assumed it would have been out three months ago, too. Any more delays, and it's going to start looking oddly like Deadache >:)
